With its Redmi smartphone brand, Xiaomi seems to have made some good resolutions for the new year. So, for the launch of the new Redmi Note 14 Pro 5G, the manufacturer has its slogan: “Future-proof”. The terminal launched in France on January 15 aims to meet the expectations of consumers who, when replacing their smartphone, increasingly want to choose a terminal that will last and that they will not have to replace too quickly.
Up to 40 months, instead of 18
The days (certainly blessed by manufacturers!) are well and truly over when you replaced your smartphone every 18 months on average. Today, devices are undoubtedly of better quality, with functions that only marginally change from year to year. It is also important to take into account the growing environmental awareness of consumers (probably as quickly as their wallets shrink!).
Result: it now takes between 36 and 40 months according to Arcep for us to renew our inseparable digital toys. Xiaomi understands this. Its new Redmi Note 14 Pro 5G was designed taking this new situation into account, with a terminal that wants to reassure us about its ability to accompany us for a long time.
200% more durable
A smartphone with a 6.67-inch (16.94 cm) 120 Hz Amoled screen available in three colors: green, purple or matte black, the first two being associated with a textured coating.
For an improved lifespan, the device is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus 2 glass. In addition, the angles of the mobile chassis have been reinforced, which would allow the Redmi Note 14 Pro to display resistance to accidental falls up to ‘200% higher than the previous generation Redmi Note. A very selling point, except that we don’t know what it corresponds to exactly…
IP68 rated (the highest current standard), the newcomer is resistant to dust and immersion for up to 30 minutes. In the end, the smartphone proudly displays a repairability rate of 8.2 out of 10. Not bad.
Battery life preserved
For a smartphone that lasts longer, Xiaomi also equips its Redmi Note 14 Pro with a 5,110 mAh battery which benefits, according to the manufacturer, from “4 years of preserved autonomy”. This assumes that at the end of this period, the terminal’s battery (whose daily use is optimized) must not show any real signs of weakness, but always display a capacity of at least 80%.
-And if we take a closer look at the “engine”, it is the Snapdragon 7S Gen 3 chip which equips the new smartphone. Introduced by Qualcomm in August 2024 and dedicated to entry-level and mid-range smartphones, this chipset latest generation gives pride of place to artificial intelligence.
AI, like on the Galaxy S24… a year ago
Thus, the Redmi Note 14 Pro 5G develops, in particular thanks to Google’s Gemini, a whole range of AI-based functions. For photography and video on the one hand*: to enhance portraits; remove distracting elements from an image; create vlogs automatically… For productivity on the other hand: simultaneous translation, summary of notes, automatic subtitling, transcription of conversations… Searching by photos or, more simply by circling an element on an image, makes also part of the baggage of the new smartphone. Xiaomi is thus keeping up to date by offering on its mid-range smartphone functions that Samsung had introduced on its premium Galaxy 24 smartphones just a year ago.
Six years of updates
The final nerve of the war in claiming to offer a smartphone that lasts over time: updates.
For the Redmi Note 14 Pro 5G, Xiaomi promises 6 years of security updates, and four major software upgrades, which, according to the manufacturer, would be “the right compromise”. Thus, according to him, it is not certain that terminals released in 2025 will be technically calibrated to support software updates about which we still know nothing, once this deadline has passed. Which can be understood. Still, others, like Samsung and Google, promise seven years of updates on some of their terminals.
With its Redmi Note 14 Pro 5G, Xiaomi therefore wants to reassure consumers looking for an inexpensive smartphone, capable of supporting them for a few years. On paper, the promises of the terminal are rather tempting. Available in 256 GB, it is sold for 399 euros, an extremely aggressive price for a smartphone with such a technical sheet. If it is identical to that of the Redmi Note 13 Pro 5G, when it is launched in 2022, the charger is no longer in the box… We also regret that the argument of “durability” was not associated with a more substantial memory.
* The Redmi Notre 14 Pro (5G) is equipped on the back with 200 megapixel photo sensors (f/1.65); 8 megapixels (ultra wide-angle, f/2.2); 2 megapixels (macro, f/2.4); on the front of a 20 megapixel sensor (f/2.2).
