Just installed in his office in Matignon, the new Prime Minister François Bayrou told the newspaper The Tribune his desire to propose to President Emmanuel Macron a government composed of experienced personalities. While names are already circulating, the head of government hopes that political heavyweights will agree to take on the challenges that lie ahead. “We must invent an authority that the French understand, in which they recognize themselves and where they know that they will have their place,” he explains.
Before that, the Prime Minister must also meet with the heads of parliamentary groups, whom he will receive at the start of the week in Matignon, including Marine Le Pen this Monday.
The Élysée and Matignon good friends
A government to form, but also relations with the President of the Republic to pamper. I will be “a Prime Minister of full exercise and complementarity. Those who want to write the story of a clash between the Élysée and Matignon will be denied,” confided to our colleagues at The Tribune François Bayrou. “The relationship with the president is first and foremost a personal relationship. He is a man whose audacity and courage people may not realize. There is nothing simpler for me than working with him,” explains François Bayrou.
A new head of government not really holding grudges. The president of MoDem, who wants to unite, almost did not get appointed on Friday at Matignon. Emmanuel Macron first informed him, his oldest ally since 2017, of his intention to appoint Minister of the Armed Forces Sébastien Lecornu to Matignon… before finally appointing him a few hours later.
“You are President of the Republic, you have to choose a Prime Minister in particularly difficult times; it’s normal that you take the time to examine all the options and their consequences,” explains François Bayrou. “I have never known a president who agreed to tie his hands. The presidential function is a function that calls for freedom,” insists the new Prime Minister.
