European Commission: a vote won with an “elastic” majority

Ursula von der Leyen intends to work with a pro-European majority, bringing together the EPP, S&D, Renew and the Greens. Its party president, Manfred Weber, adds Giorgia Meloni’s ECR group. A red line for certain socialists, liberals and ecologists. Not to the point of calling into question the approval of the new executive.

Lhe European Union has adopted, for five years, a new decision-making method: the “elastic” majority. Or a coalition formed, in the European Parliament, around the dominant and pivotal group, the European People’s Party (conservative, center right). On “platform” with the socialists (S&D) and the liberals (Renew). And in free union with the Greens but also the Conservatives and reformists of Giorgia Meloni (ECR, far right). It is this alliance which will endorse, this Wednesday noon, the new Commission. With a certain internal elasticity, since none of the groups will line up unanimously behind the 27 members of the new college.
