The Swiss will vote again on easier naturalization

Published on November 21, 2024 at 5:03 p.m. / Modified on November 21, 2024 at 6:23 p.m.

Switzerland has some of the strictest naturalization rules in Europe. And, since the famous satirical comedy The Swiss Makers of 1978, the situation ultimately changed little. Four times, between 1983 and 2004, the population refused any relaxation of procedures. And this until February 2017, when a majority finally approved (at 60.4%) facilitated naturalization, but only for third-generation foreigners. However, citizens will once again be called upon to express their views on this issue of citizenship. This Thursday morning, in Bern, the initiative “For a modern nationality law (initiative for democracy)” was submitted with 135,000 signatures, including 104,603 certified. The text proposes a paradigm shift.
