the president of the Transition dismisses the Prime Minister and members of the Government

AA / Bamako / Amarana Maiga

The President of the Transition of Mali, Army General Assimi Goïta, dismissed Prime Minister Choguel Kokalla Maiga and dissolved the government, according to a presidential decree read this Wednesday on national television (ORTM).

“The president of the transition, head of state (…) decrees that the functions of the Prime Minister and members of the Government are terminated,” indicates a decree read on Malian Radio and Television by Alfousseyni Diawara, Secretary General of the Presidency.

Prime Minister Choguel Kokalla Maïga strongly criticized, on Saturday, during the meeting of the “June 5 Movement, Rally of Patriotic Forces” (M5-RFP), the management of the transition.

In his 23-page speech, Choguel Kokala Maïga first took stock of the transition before highlighting his concerns regarding the management of the transition.

“The transition was supposed to end on March 26, 2024, but we saw its postponement indefinitely, unilaterally, without debate within the government,” he lamented.

“I myself, as Prime Minister, am content with rumors from the press or a random interpretation of the actions of the Minister of Territorial Administration and Decentralization,” he further denounced.

Since his speech on November 16, 2024, voices have been raised in Mali to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Choguel Kokalla Maïga and demand legal proceedings for “high transition”.

The Military Defense Collective (CDM) “rigorously condemned” the Prime Minister’s comments and demanded his resignation for high treason within 72 hours.

The same source specifies that “Choguel Kokalla Maïga betrayed his mission and is now part of a logic of denouncing the Transition authorities”.

As a reminder, Malian transitional president Assimi Goïta appointed Choguel Kokalla Maiga as Prime Minister on June 7, 2021 after taking office as head of state.

Assimi Goïta led the coup d’état, ending the mandate of President Ibrahim Boubaker Keita, on August 18, 2020.

After sanctions from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union, Goïta was forced to cede power to President Bah N’Daw who was to lead an 18-month transition, from September 15, 2020.

Eight months later, a new putsch ended N’Daw’s functions and Goïta regained power.
