Lockout at the Port of Montreal: resumption of operations required from Saturday morning

Locked out since Sunday, the Port of Montreal will have to resume operations on Saturday morning.

The Canadian Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) issued an order on Thursday to require the resumption of activities no later than Saturday at 7 a.m.

Under this order, the Association of Maritime Employers (AEM) will have to allow port operators to resume their operations. Employees should receive their assignments Friday around 6 p.m.

“The AEM is counting on the collaboration of the Longshoremen’s Union, CUPE local section 375, its members, the Montreal Port Authority and all other partners in the supply chain to facilitate a return to normal activities at the Port of Montreal,” wrote an AEM spokesperson.

On Sunday, the AEM initiated a lockout at the port of Montreal following the rejection of its overall final offer by 99.7% of longshoremen.

On Tuesday, Labor Minister Steve MacKinnon asked the CIRB to proceed with binding arbitration to resolve the impasse between the employer and the union.
