Since January 1, 2024, the diabetes startup program, introduced by Minister Frank Vandenbroucke, offers people with diabetes structured and accessible support. With this system, patients benefit from free education sessions, dietary and podiatry consultations, facilitating comprehensive management of the disease. More than 115,000 patients have already joined this program through their general practitioner, confirming the interest in this personalized and financially affordable approach.

Multidisciplinary care and personalized support

The start-up journey aims to provide patients with a better understanding of diabetes, particularly on possible complications and the importance of preventive examinations. It includes four free education sessions per year, two free consultations with a dietitian, as well as two free visits to a podiatrist for those with increased foot risks. This comprehensive approach allows patients to benefit from tailored advice to manage the disease on a daily basis.

Reimbursement of preventive oral examination

Since the launch of this program, the annual oral examination has also been reimbursed for all diabetic people, regardless of their care pathway. Dental care is essential for people with diabetes, whose fractional diet can impact oral health. This additional reimbursement underlines the authorities’ commitment to providing comprehensive and accessible support.

20 years of progress in diabetes care

Frank Vandenbroucke underlines that collaborative efforts between authorities and patient associations, such as the Diabetes Association, have contributed to improving the detection and support of people with diabetes in Belgium. Thanks to these initiatives, patients find their way more easily to appropriate care, guaranteeing quality follow-up for this chronic illness.

The diabetes start-up journey represents a significant step forward in supporting people with diabetes in Belgium, with an emphasis on accessibility and personalization of care.
