A US mother has been accused of killing her 14-year-old daughter by giving her a fentanyl pill to ‘relieve’ her toothache.
The teenager, who was not identified by local authorities, went to her mother to complain about her dental problem on October 3, the New York Post.
Jacquelyn Powers first tried to provide her with Tylenol medication to help ease the pain, but it did not have the expected effect for the young girl.
That’s when the mother took a fentanyl pill from her drawer to give to her daughter.
She was found dead almost 10 hours later in her home by police officers from the Overland department, near Saint-Louis, in the state of Missouri.
Fentanyl is a very powerful opioid. A few grains of the drug are enough to kill a person, according to Health Canada.
Mme Powers told police she was convinced he gave him oxycodone, a less potent narcotic used to manage pain.
However, the autopsy revealed that the teenager died of a fentanyl overdose and that no tests detected the presence of oxycodone in her body, reported Fox 2 Now.
The mother nevertheless admitted that the fentanyl pills belonged to her and that they were inside a home where a minor lived, according to an arrest warrant.
Jacquelyn Powers was charged with first-degree endangering the welfare of a child and causing death, according to court documents from the St. Louis, Mo., persecutors. She is currently being held in the county jail awaiting trial.
If convicted, she could face a life sentence with the possibility of parole.
