In Sudan, the cholera epidemic continues to spread worryingly. Since last August, more than 34,000 cases have been recorded, causing 979 deaths. The Sudanese Ministry of Health recently announced the recording of 190 new cases, bringing the total contaminations to 34,108. This situation is most alarming for the country.
At the same time, the state of Kassala, located in the east of the country, is also experiencing an increase in dengue cases. The Health Ministry reported 69 new infections, bringing the total number to 6,322 cases. Unfortunately, dengue fever has already led to the deaths of 14 people. On September 19, authorities reported 232 suspected cases of the disease, two of which resulted in death.
These health crises occur while the country is devastated by armed conflict. Since mid-April 2023, the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces have clashed, causing a disastrous humanitarian situation. According to the United Nations, around 18,800 people have died as a result of the violence, and nearly 10 million people have been displaced or become refugees.
Faced with this emergency, the international community, supported by the United Nations, is launching urgent appeals to avoid an even more serious humanitarian catastrophe. Food shortages due to fighting affecting 13 states across the country are increasing the risks of famine and mortality, exacerbating the suffering of many displaced people.
