In Geneva, the Diplomatic Security Brigade could lose 1 million Swiss francs

Regularly presented as the showcase of Switzerland’s place in multilateralism, the canton at the end of Lake Geneva, its summits and its international organizations could well bear the brunt of the savings measures desired by the Confederation. While finances are at half mast, the Federal Council has validated a whole series of budget cuts – which have yet to be ratified by parliament – reaching 3.5 billion francs for 2027, and 4.6 billion by 2030. Among them is the elimination of the Confederation’s subsidy to the Geneva Diplomatic Security Brigade (BSD), as revealed in the Geneva Tribune.

Amounting to 1 million francs, this subsidy is paid to the canton for the application of measures intended to guarantee the security of permanent representations and international organizations, as well as for the protection of people provided by the diplomatic police group. A sum which may seem quite low but which is “not negligible”, according to the State Councilor in charge of Institutions and Digital Affairs Carole-Anne Kast, against the will of the Federal Council. In its report, the group of experts commissioned by the Federal Department of Finance to relieve the federal coffers therefore suggests terminating this contract and removing the corresponding performance obligation.
