Former Minister of Foreign Affairs and MP Aissata Tall Sall, elected under the banner of the Takku Wallu coalition, reacted strongly to the approach of the first session of the National Assembly scheduled for December 2, 2024. She spoke on the sensitive subject of the amnesty law, a debate relaunched by the new authorities.

“They say they are going to repeal the amnesty law. We’re waiting to see. It’s easy to say, but much harder to do. And I speak with full knowledge of the facts”, she declared, emphasizing the complex legal implications linked to this approach.

Aissata Tall Sall recalled that this law had allowed the President of the Republic and his Prime Minister to be released from prison, highlighting two fundamental principles of criminal law: the intangibility of acquired rights and the non-retroactivity of laws. . “This debate is serious. If taken lightly, it calls into question the rule of law in Senegal”, she warned.

The former minister also denounced the idea that an overwhelming parliamentary majority could justify arbitrary decisions. “It is not because we have an overwhelming majority in the National Assembly that we can do anything”, she stressed, adding that this majority should devote itself to the concerns of citizens.

Finally, she expressed her doubts about the priorities displayed by the new authorities. If their ambition is limited to repealing the amnesty law or setting up a High Court of Justice, “The disappointment will be great for Senegal. They weren’t elected for that.” she concluded.
