What if in terms of prostate cancer detection, the revolution came from Martigues? The public hospital center and more particularly its urology department, have invested in the purchase of cutting-edge technology allowing micro-ultrasound biopsies to be carried out. This high-frequency imaging device offers incredible definition, triple that of an MRI previously offered. Around twenty healthcare establishments – two public hospitals, the rest being private clinics – are equipped, in France, with this young technology which saw the light of day in 2019. And Martigues is the only establishment in the south-eastern quarter of France to be equipped with it. Doctor Harry Toledano, head of the urology department, has just obtained certification as an expert in micro-ultrasound, thus joining a very restricted circle of specialists recognized in France. The stakes are high. “Prostate cancer is the leading cause of cancer in men and the third in terms of mortality.explains Doctor Toledano. It is a so-called middle-aged cancer, since those affected are, on average, 83 years old. But it is not a very often aggressive cancer since the 5-year survival rate is 95%.“. Hence the interest in detecting it as early as possible. And this is where the micro-ultrasound technique comes in.
To talk about it, a little trip to the block was necessary.
See you on this Wednesday morning where several interventions are scheduled. In France, these medical procedures are performed under general anesthesia, unlike other countries where it is carried out, in a doctor’s office, under loco-regional anesthesia. It must be agreed, however, that for the sake of comfort, it is better to be completely asleep!
