Former Senegalese President Macky Sall could mark a new stage in his political journey on November 17 by becoming the first former head of state of the country to abstain from voting in a general election, not by ban, but by choice. After being named head of the list of the Takku-Wallu coalition for the early legislative elections of 2024, Macky Sall, residing since his departure from the presidency in Marrakech in Morocco, will not be able to fulfill his duty to vote from abroad.
Registered on the electoral lists of the commune of Fatick, he is officially attached to office no. 3 of the Thierno Mamadou Sall College, where he voted last March during the presidential election. However, due to the absence of an exceptional revision of the electoral lists decided by the Constitutional Council on July 12, 2024, no change of voting location was made possible within the framework of these legislative elections.
Although Macky Sall could, in theory, return to Senegal to vote, this hypothesis seems unlikely. He has so far avoided the electoral campaign, and his return could spark tensions, with some supporters of the current government having raised the idea of trying him for alleged acts committed during his mandate. This threat has not been made official, but it could dissuade the former president from returning to the country.
