Ahmed Moghrabi arrived in Brussels three weeks ago. This Palestinian doctor found refuge in our country after the destruction of his hospital by the Israeli army. He testifies.
“Gaza no longer exists, the city is completely destroyed“, he says, disappointed. Ahmed Moghrabi is a plastic surgeon, specialist in severe burns. He describes atrocious working conditions since the war. Fear, violence, lack of medicine and equipment.
“I operated day and night without stopping. We were faced with hundreds of bodies and hundreds of wounded arriving every hour.“, says our interlocutor. The surgeon remembers in particular a little boy of 9 years old, very seriously injured and who had lost his entire family: “Honestly, I looked at him, I felt helpless, I didn’t know how to treat him. He was the only survivor of his family, I wanted to do everything possible for this child and I did it, I saved him.”
He also recounts all those times when he unfortunately could not do anything to save the injured. Last February, when the Israeli army began attacking the Nasser hospital, Ahmed Moghrabi decided to flee the Gaza Strip with his entire family to Egypt. His wife and 6 children are still in Cairo. Ahmed calls them every day.
“We couldn’t even find anything to eat. There was nothing. I was looking for dry bread. My youngest daughter, 4 years old, Seba, asked me for something sweet, a banana, but there was nothing. What could I tell my children?“, he testifies again.
At 47, he was able to obtain a student visa to come to Belgium thanks to the help of his director friend, Delphine Noels, who hosted him. “There, now that we are working on trying to bring his family over and I see him regaining prospects, it’s moving“, says the latter.
The surgeon continues his action to help the Gazan population. With Delphine, they created the Compassionate Hearts for Palestine association, a clinic which has already seen the light of day, soon a school. “There are no more schools in Gaza. We have around 70 children ready for primary school in a refugee camp“, adds the Palestinian.
Without status, the surgeon’s children cannot go to school in Egypt. They only dream of one thing, continuing their interrupted education for the second year in a row. Ahmed Moghrabi is impatiently awaiting them in Belgium.
