August 31, 2024, at 919e On the day of the Russian “special operation,” the situation on the ground for both sides is roughly the same as it was in November 2022, after Kiev’s surprise counteroffensive – which liberated about ten thousand square kilometers. Since then, Russia has been nibbling away at the front line mainly in the east of the country, and north of the city of Kharkiv since May.

After progressing very slowly, evidently at the cost of heavy losses, Moscow controlled about 17.78% of Ukrainian territory at the end of August, with a gain of about 360 square kilometers – its largest monthly gain since the summer of 2022. At the height of its advance, in March 2022, it occupied just over a quarter.

This chart does not take into account Ukraine’s incursion into Russia’s Kursk Oblast, an area of about 770 square kilometers, by the end of August 2024 – equivalent to what Russia conquered in Ukraine between April and August 2024.

This graph represents, from January 2022 to Todaythe percentage of the 603,550 km² of Ukrainian territory occupied by Russia and that controlled by kyiv.
