A power plant spread over two sites will be built from January 2025 in a desert area along the Gulf of Suez, for a total capacity of 1.1 gigawatts.

The French infrastructure fund Meridiam, one of the main shareholders of the Suez group, will invest more than a billion euros in a wind power project in Egypt, it announced on Wednesday. A power plant spread over two sites will be built from January 2025 in a desert area along the Gulf of Suez, for a total capacity of 1.1 gigawatts, the equivalent of the entire French offshore wind farm. This investment is part of the country’s desire to increase the renewable electricity production capacity in its production mix to 42% by 2030.

Reduce energy shortages

It was 11.5% in 2023, according to declarations by Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly in December, including 6.2% from hydroelectric power plants, 3% from wind power and 2.3% from solar power. The operation of the plant, claimed as « the largest in Africa » should begin in 2027, for a duration of 25 years. Egypt had already inaugurated at the end of December a solar power plant with 500 megawatts of capacity in Aswan, in the south of the country, to stimulate the production of renewable energy and reduce electricity shortages which have become frequent, if not daily, during periods strong heat.

At the beginning of January, the French energy company Engie also signed a contract in Egypt for the extension of a wind farm located on the shores of the Gulf of Suez, which will increase its total capacity from 500 megawatts to 650 megawatts.
