The winter exhibition ofICP begins January 23 with Weegee : Society of the Spectaclepresented until May 5 (in partnership with the Henri Cartier-Bresson Foundation).
The exhibition revisits Weegee’s bold, avant-garde perspective and celebrates his pioneering role in documenting spectacle, from crime and tragedy on the streets of New York to distorted portraits of iconic Hollywood celebrities. Drawn largely from ICP’s Weegee collection, the exhibition marks the sixth major presentation of Weegee’s work at ICP and the first since its move to Manhattan’s Lower East Side—the same neighborhood which Weegee transformed into an urban scene in his photographs.
The exhibition comes at a time when Weegee’s commentary on the blurred lines between reality and performance, news and entertainment, seems of new relevance and urgency in the age of smartphones and viral media, where every individual has become both a voyeur and a consumer of the spectacle. The exhibition is accompanied by a new publication created by the Foundation and Thames & Hudson which explores the impact of Weegee’s work and his critical vision of urban spectacle. Press copies are available, if desired.
