Servette FC returns to the Super League by welcoming FC Saint-Gall this Saturday January 18 at 8:30 p.m. After a mixed end to 2024, marked by disappointing results, the Garnets will be keen to get back on the path to victory against an opponent who is always difficult to maneuver. Currently 5th in the standings, the Genevans can no longer afford any missteps.
The performances of the last matches
The Servettians concluded the first round with a 2-1 defeat against the Young Boys of Bern. A result which added to a worrying series for Thomas Haberli’s players, with only one victory in 7 matches.
During the winter break, the team was able to play two friendly matches in Spain to prepare for the restart. The first, against NAC Breda, a Dutch team, ended in a 3-2 defeat. A few days later, the Genevans made up for it by winning 3-1 against Karlsruhe, a Bundesliga 2 team. An encouraging victory which concludes a hopeful preparation for the return to competition.
The form of the opponent
FC St. Gallen approaches this match with a certain confidence, with a series of three matches without defeat, including two victories. In their last league match, the Saint-Gallois beat FC Zurich 2-0 away. Then, ended the year with a draw (1-1) in Germany against Heidenheim in the UEFA Conference League.
In 2025, their only warm-up match resulted in a 2-1 victory against Karlsruhe. Although 8th in the standings, 4 points behind Servette FC, this is a team to watch closely, especially when it is driven by positive dynamics.
The Servettians to follow
Unsurprisingly, Derek Kutesa will be the man to watch on the Servetti side. Current top scorer in the Super League with 11 goals, he found the net in the last two championship matches. His effectiveness will be essential for the Garnet in their quest for crucial points.
-Alongside him, Timothé Cognat and Alexis Antunes, returning from suspension and injury respectively, could also play a decisive role. Antunes stood out in particular by scoring in the last friendly match. Formidable weapons that will shake the Saint Gall defense.
The Servettians will look to start 2025 on a good note in a match that promises to be competitive. An opportunity for them to move up the rankings and show a new face to the many supporters present at the Stade de Genève.
