This season, the Canadian is still spoiled in terms of recruits.
Obviously, there’s Lane Hutson, whose prowess on the ice is well documented. Everyone – or almost – knows that it is déjà a leading defender in Montreal.
There is also Emil Heineman. Yes, he will miss a few weeks of activities after being hit by a car in Salt Lake City, but he still remains one of the most productive rookies on the Bettman circuit, as of this writing.
And now we can add Jakub Dobes to the list. And this, despite the small sample.
In four games, the goalkeeper has four victories against big clubs (Panthers, Avalanche, Capitals and Stars) and he has only given four goals in total. He’s really dominant.
Martin St-Louis, at this point, can send it against any NHL club.
Such a feat of arms (four games, four wins, four goals) for a goalie taking his first steps in the NHL is a pace that is simply historic. In 60 years, only three guys have ever done it.
Just four goals in his first four games in the NHL under the colors of the Montreal Canadiens, the biggest franchise in hockey, has never been seen before for a goalie.
So we can say this: Cayden who?
Dobes’ average of 0.98, his efficiency rate of .963 (so 24 out of 25 pucks are stopped) and his shutout show us that he wasn’t kidding when he said he was ready for the NHL.
-Yesterday, after the game, Dobes said that he really wanted to be recalled and that he worked accordingly in Laval. Obviously it worked.
We must never forget that a young person’s development is never linear (Juraj Slafkovsky is a good example) and that the goalie could/should have down periods along the way.
But right now, the way he’s playing and because he’s helping the Canadian win, it’s hard to imagine a world where this competitor returns to Laval by the end of the season. However, he should not take anything for granted because it can change quickly, but…
