In a strategic movement which marks a key stage in the evolution of railway infrastructure in Morocco, the project for the future railway network mixing RER and LGV between Marrakech and Benguerir is taking shape. This monumental project is part of a dynamic of national transformation aimed at meeting the growing needs for rapid and efficient transport.

By widening the extension of the High Speed Line (LGV) to Marrakech, this project aims to modernize and interconnect the transport networks of the ocher city and its suburbs, in order to strengthen the economy and regional accessibility.

A response to growing needs

According to The Deskthe National Railway Office (ONCF) plans the construction of 18 new LGV and RER stations as part of this ambitious project. These infrastructures will be used to integrate local and proximity transport needs with those of long-distance journeys. The main objective is to create a fluid and interconnected network connecting the different parts of the Marrakech-Safi region. Among these new infrastructures, we find in particular a second LGV station in Marrakech and four strategically distributed RER stations.

These latest generation stations, designed to integrate advanced technologies, promise to offer optimal comfort to passengers while meeting current environmental requirements. By adopting ecological solutions and technological innovations, the ONCF wishes to improve the quality of transport services while optimizing the energy efficiency of these installations.

Benguerir: a new station for a green city

Among the key infrastructures, the new LGV station planned in Benguerir will play a central role in this project. Located near the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University, this station is described as a “smart and ecological city of knowledge”. It will embody modern urban planning, combining sustainability and connectivity. This strategic choice aims to strengthen transport capacities while promoting integrated and sustainable urban development.

In addition, two new RER stations will see the light of day in Sidi Bou Othmane and Sidi Ghanem, key industrial zones for the region. These stations will facilitate the movement of workers between urban and industrial areas, thereby strengthening economic productivity and reducing transportation times.

An expanded ambition for the 2030 World Cup

As reported by Le Desk, one of the major components of this project is the integration of an RER station located near the Grand Stade de Marrakech. This station, strategically located in the north of the city, will play a key role in the organization of international events, notably the 2030 World Cup, preparations for which are accelerating. By providing optimized accessibility to the stadium, it will help attract a greater number of visitors and strengthen the local economy.

Interoperability constitutes one of the strategic axes of this project. By creating multifunctional hubs, the ONCF aims to effectively connect the different modes of transport: LGV, RER and New Regional Trains (TNR). These stations will be designed as nerve centers facilitating intermodal mobility. According to the ONCF, this vision aims to make travel more fluid, thus meeting the expectations of an increasingly mobile and demanding population.

Modern and ecological infrastructure

With an allocated budget of 460 million dirhams, the project is based on cutting-edge infrastructure. In addition to their technological efficiency, these stations will respect strict standards in terms of sustainable development. This ecological component is part of Morocco’s overall objectives, which aims to reconcile modernity and respect for the environment. These efforts demonstrate the country’s commitment to addressing climate challenges while meeting growing mobility needs.
