The Thiès District Court was recently the scene of an incredible case combining family theft, nighttime parties and a plea of insanity. C. Faye, a young man living in Fandène, found himself facing justice after stealing 2.5 million FCFA from his own sister, M. Faye, to enjoy a life of debauchery in nightclubs from Dakar. An episode which aroused as much indignation as perplexity, as reported by L’Observateur.
A carefully planned flight
According to information reported by L’Observateur, on the day of the events, C. Faye took advantage of her sister’s absence to commit her crime. Discreetly entering his room, he searched his cupboard and found a carefully concealed envelope, containing the 2.5 million FCFA. Without wasting time, he left Fandène for Dakar, where he squandered the entire sum in bars and nightclubs.
The arrest and confession
Returning to Fandène after his escapade, C. Faye was arrested by the gendarmerie, following a complaint filed by his sister. In court, the defendant did not deny the facts. On the contrary, he accepted, while trying to exonerate himself by pleading insanity: “It was I who stole this money. I didn’t do it on purpose. I was not lucid that day. I sometimes have mental problems. »
He also detailed his plan: “I waited until my sister was away to sneak into her room. I took the envelope and left directly for Dakar. I spent it all in nightclubs and bars. »
A family pardon, but not a judicial one
Despite the seriousness of the facts, Mr. Faye, the victim, showed great clemency. She confirmed that her brother sometimes showed signs of mental disorders, before granting him forgiveness. However, the prosecutor dismissed the insanity theory out of hand, arguing that no medical document confirmed it. According to him, C. Faye fully enjoyed his mental faculties at the time of the events.
A lenient verdict
The judge, taking into account the defendant’s confession and the victim’s forgiveness, opted for a lenient sentence. C. Faye was found guilty of theft and sentenced to three months in prison. A decision which gives the latter a chance to redeem himself without escaping justice.
Lesson from a family scandal
This case, relayed by L’Observateur, illustrates a sad reality: financial conflicts can corrupt even the closest family relationships. For Mr. Faye, this theft remains a shock, but his forgiveness testifies to the resilience and importance of family ties. As for C. Faye, this light sentence could be an opportunity for him to turn his life around. However, as the court emphasized, justice cannot tolerate such behavior, whether motivated by madness or by the unbridled search for ephemeral pleasures.
