Particularly because of a completely failed start to the match, Clermont suffered a heavy defeat on the Bath pitch. The ASM also evolved for almost an hour at fourteen after the exclusion of Giorgi Akhaladze. Setback with a score of 40-21 for the Auvergnats, who will play their qualification for the elimination phase against Bristol next week.
It must be said that the Auvergnats were not in the best position to achieve a result, with such a poor start to the match. After a touch towards the halfway line, the ball went towards Ojomoh who crossed the first curtain. The ball went out towards the right side for a try by De Glanville (7-0, 4th). Behind, it was Lawrence who passed the defense too easily, in a three-quarter combination. He opened the way for a strong effort from his forwards, finally concluded by Russell (14-0, 8th). Ten minutes to wake up but it got better after that. And after a long sequence in the 22m, Fainga’a unlocked the Clermont counter in force (14-7, 14th).
Solid again in defense, more inspired in attack, we thought ASM was back in the game. But this momentum was cut off by a high tackle from Akhaladze on Ojomoh (26th). Contact to the head, and the referee showed the direct red card. A surprising decision as more dangerous tackles have been penalized much less this season. After this blow to the head, Clermont conceded another try, on an overhand from Russell, concluded by Cokanasiga (21-7, 28th). Belleau in turn reduced the gap for the visitors after occupying the English 22m (21-14, 38th), to keep his team in the match, but the second half promised to be very difficult.
