A 14-year-old boy stabbed to death in Évreux: what we know

On Friday January 10, between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m., an altercation broke out between two minors in Évreux, in the sensitive Madeleine district. “One of the two minors, aged 16, apparently suffered at least one stab wound to the chest of the other minor, aged 14, who died very quickly,” indicated the public prosecutor of Évreux, Rémi Coutin.

The victim would have been transported by his own family to the hospital, where his death “was immediately noted”, according to Rémi Coutin.

  • 2 The suspect in police custody

The prosecutor did not confirm initial reports that the suspect had surrendered to police. “What I can say is that he was very quickly arrested and taken into custody by the Évreux police,” underlines the magistrate.

According to a police source, the young man suspected of having carried out the stabbings then took refuge with a neighbor, from where he called the police. The police arrested him shortly after at this neighbor’s house, according to the same source.

Police custody should be extended until Sunday and a judicial investigation will be opened late Sunday afternoon. A flagrant investigation into the murder of a minor under the age of 15 is underway, said the prosecutor.

  • 3 A “love quarrel” at the origin of the tragedy?

The prosecutor remained cautious about the origin of the altercation between the two defendants. A press conference on this case will be organized at the Évreux court on Monday, and no further information will be communicated by the prosecution until then.

According to Mayor Guy Lefrand, “according to the first elements of the investigation, a romantic quarrel would be at the origin of the facts”. According to him, the suspect and the victim “are from the same community, the same group”.

  • 4 Journalists “rushed” or “attacked”?

The altercation occurred in the priority district of Madeleine, scene of urban violence or clashes between gangs in recent years, but which was “rather calm recently”, according to the mayor. Following the death of the 14-year-old teenager, “there was no particular commotion, it was very calm, we monitored last night, nothing particular happened”, he assured. “It’s more a story within a group than anything else,” he said.

This Saturday afternoon, the RMC/BFM group, for its part, denounced the attack on two of its journalists in Évreux, where they had just produced a duplex for the continuous news channel BFMTV on this affair. The journalists were injured and taken to the emergency room, said the channel, which announced its intention to file a complaint.

According to a police source, the journalists were “rushed”. “There were no blows” delivered, “it was more of a stampede”, according to the first elements collected on the ground, added this source.
