Donald Trump sees the world as a playground for real estate developers. Its return will take us a little further from a multilateral world governed by rules towards a transactional universe made of agreements, sometimes sordid, often unpredictable. Mr. Trump, like Vladimir Putin, believes that the vocation of the strong is to devour the weak. In itself, the idea of Ukraine being in the Russian orbit does not bother him. He himself talks about buying Greenland, absorbing Canada and recovering the Panama Canal! His rhetoric serves the Kremlin, just as it may serve Beijing’s views on Taiwan. Mr. Trump fundamentally believes in strength. He makes fun of those who wanted to make people believe that competition between States was an old thing from the 19th century.e century.
