On January 1, 2025, the low emissions zone (ZFE) comes into force in the metropolis of Rennes, as the law now provides for all cities with more than 150,000 inhabitants. From this date, therefore, you will need a Crit'air sticker to travel in the Rennes low-emissions zone, that is to say inside the ring road, with the Boulevard des Alliés bordering the is – the park and ride facilities will be outside the ZFE so as to remain accessible as widely as possible. Motorized two-wheelers, cars, vans, heavy goods vehicles: the Crit'Air sticker is now compulsory inside this zone.
A step-by-step measure
Initially, only the oldest vehicles are affected by the ZFE. The ban on the circulation of other polluting vehicles will then last until 2030.
As of January 1, 2025: all unclassified motorized vehicles (for cars: gasoline and diesel vehicles registered until December 31, 1996); January 1, 2027: Crit' Air 5 (diesels registered until December 31, 2000) and unclassified ones; January 1, 2029: Crit'Air 4 (diesels registered until December 31, 2005), Crit'air 5 and unclassified; January 1, 2030: CritAir 3 (diesels registered until December 31, 2010 and gasoline registered until December 31, 2005), unclassified, Crit'Air 4 and 5.
How to do it?
The procedures are the responsibility of the user, and can be done online.
Exemptions
Numerous exemptions have been adopted to allow better absorption of the measure. Firefighter, police and emergency medical aid vehicles and ambulances will not be affected, as will vehicles carrying a parking card for disabled people. A “24-hour ZFE Pass” will also be created to allow prohibited vehicles to circulate in the ZFE for one day. All exceptions specific to the Rennes ZFE will only last three years. And the Metropolis announced that there would be, initially, few controls. But from 2027 these controls should be automated…
