It was barely six years ago. After the spectacular recovery of Nissan by Renault undertaken from the beginning of the century, the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance then established itself as the world's leading automobile manufacturer ahead of Volkswagen and Toyota.
The least we can say is that this alliance then experienced more difficult years. Eager to regain power by freeing themselves from the supervision of Renault, the Japanese of Nissan managed to remove CEO Carlos Ghosn in a highly publicized affair before renegotiating the agreements with Renault within the Alliance. Faced with a once again delicate financial situation, Nissan is now turning to Honda to prepare for its future and seems to be irremediably distancing itself from Renault, which still owns 36% of the capital of the Japanese brand.
Renault takes note
In a short official press release, the diamond brand takes note of these recent developments: “Renault Group takes note of the announcements made today by Nissan and Honda, which are still at a preliminary stage. As the main shareholder of Nissan, Renault Group will consider all options in the best interests of the Group and its stakeholders.
Renault Group continues to execute its strategy and deploy projects that create value for the Group, including those launched as part of the Alliance”we can read there.
Remember that other new Nissan products benefiting from Renault technology are expected in the near future, such as the all-new electric Micra designed for the European market. But if the negotiations with Honda are successful, these collaborations between Renault and Nissan will quickly cease and the French manufacturer will most likely resell its shares.
