The future of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's leadership appeared more uncertain after New Democratic Party (NDP) leader Jagmeet Singh, a key ally, said he would mount a bid to topple the minority Liberal government.

Singh, whose party is helping to keep Trudeau in office, announced in an open letter posted on social media that he will declare a loss of confidence in the Trudeau-led Liberal government next year, a move that would trigger an early election for his match. it would be another opposition. the parties support his move.

The next elections in Canada will have to take place by October.

Singh is the last of Canada's three main opposition parties to turn against Trudeau.

In his letter, Singh said the Liberals don't deserve “another chance.”

“This is why the NDP will vote to bring down this government and give Canadians the chance to vote for a government that will work for them,” he wrote.

He said the New Democrats intended to use the next day of opposition in the House of Commons – where opposition priorities take priority over government business – to introduce the vote.

The House is currently on winter break and is expected to resume on January 27.

Singh's letter came amid questions about Trudeau's future, with at least 21 Liberal MPs calling for his resignation, CBC News reported.

Singh's announcement is the latest in a series of political setbacks faced by Trudeau this week following the resignation of Chrystia Freeland, his deputy prime minister and finance minister.

Freeland withdrew hours before the release of an economic statement scheduled for Monday, citing political disagreements between her and Trudeau over the “best path forward for Canada” in the face of tariff threats from U.S. President-elect Donald Trump.

“No matter who leads the Liberal Party, this government has time,” Singh's letter reads.

Singh also said the Liberals often failed to deliver on their promises and that it was time for a change.

The letter was released shortly before Trudeau announced his revamped bench Friday morning.

The New Democrats ended their parliamentary alliance with the Liberals in early September, but repeatedly declared confidence in the government when the Conservatives voted to topple the Liberals.

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has repeatedly called for the elections to take place as soon as possible.

If Singh voted with the Conservatives, “we would be a third of the way through the campaign right now,” Poilievre told reporters on Friday.

“But he suddenly had a seizure and says he can no longer endure the costly chaos he caused as part of the NDP-Liberal coalition.”

The Conservative leader said he was writing to Governor General Mary Simon “asking her to urgently recall Parliament and call for a vote of no confidence” to end Trudeau's regime.

Trudeau has not responded publicly to these calls and has told party members that he will take the holidays to reflect and decide what to do.
