A new catastrophe in the Belgian Union

For some time now, things have not really been going well in the Belgian Union. After a disappointing World Cup in Qatar, the dynamic has changed.

The results were initially good before deteriorating. But if the generational change and the decisions of Domenico Tedesco are a lot of talk, there is another problem facing the Belgian Union and it concerns its finances.

Still in the red

We knew that 2023 had been particularly bad with a loss of 12 million euros. The dismissal of Piet Vandendriessche, the CEO, was also due to his inability to rectify the situation.

His successor, Peter WIllems, has initiated significant budget cuts to try to bring the accounts back into balance but as Het Laatste Nieuws reveals, the year 2024 will also end in the red, without us knowing precisely the extent of the loss.

An original solution

Without a major tournament in 2025 for men, it will be complicated to bring in significant sums of money. The Red Flames’ Euro 2025 could bring a little fresh air but will not be enough unless there is an exploit.

We will therefore have to continue to look for solutions and in this context, a dismissal of Domenico Tedesco is obviously not the best thing that could happen. His severance pay will, however, be reduced in January and a new coach could then arrive.

Another solution to save significant sums would be to relocate the qualifying matches for the 2026 World Cup to different stadiums in the kingdom and thus not play at the King Baudouin stadium. Nothing has yet been officially validated at this level.
