Disgruntled New York Rangers player Kaapo Kakko has been traded.
He moved to the Seattle Kraken for defenseman Will Borgen, a third-round pick and a 2025 sixth-round pick.
Kakko has been at loggerheads with management for a few days, especially since he was left out on Sunday during the game against the St. Louis Blues.
The striker has only 4 goals and 10 assists in 29 games this season.
Kakko played 330 career games with the Rangers over six seasons, recording 61 goals and 70 assists for 131 points, as well as 80 penalty minutes.
The 23-year-old Finn was surprised by coach Peter Laviolette’s decision. Kakko added that he paid the price because he is younger and that older players would have deserved to be left out before him.
“I know that you have to do something as a coach when you lose matches,” declared the young player, “but I think it is easy to choose a young person and take him out of training. That’s how I feel, to be honest. »
“I haven’t been on the ice often for our opponents’ goals… I’m not the worst, but I’m the one we took out of the lineup,” confided the man with the second best team differential at plus-10.
Borgen, 27, played in 33 games for Seattle this season, recording a goal and an assist for two points.
He played in 247 career NHL games over six NHL seasons with the Kraken and Buffalo Sabres, recording nine goals and 46 assists for 55 points, as well as 153 penalty minutes. Borgen has appeared in all 82 games for Seattle in each of the last two seasons.
Following this trade with Seattle, the Rangers now have seven selections in the 2025 draft.
