The separation between Fajardo and the Alouettes had become inevitable since the team offered a long-term contract to Davis Alexander three weeks ago.

“I thank Cody for his two years in Montreal, he was a true leader both in the room and on the field. I wish him the best of luck in Edmonton,” said Alouettes general manager Danny Maciocia.

Aged 36, Bethel-Thompson will become an unrestricted free agent on February 11.

The six-foot-four, 236-pound American quarterback has amassed 3,748 passing yards and 24 touchdowns to rank second in the CFL in 16 games in Edmonton in 2024.

Previously, he spent five seasons with the Toronto Argonauts (2017-2019, 2021-2022), accumulating a total of 13,261 yards and 70 touchdown passes in 74 games, including 46 as a starter.

He had his best season when he led the Argonauts to a championship in 2022. The quarterback finished the season leading the CFL with 4,731 passing yards and 23 majors.

Fajardo was the Alouettes’ starting quarterback in his two seasons in Montreal, compiling a 16-12-1 record. The 32-year-old quarterback amassed 6,967 yards and 31 touchdowns against just 16 interceptions, while completing 72.1% of his passes.

Above all, he led the Alouettes to conquer the Gray Cup in 2023, when he was voted MVP of the CFL final.
