A Super League as tight as ever

Eight teams in the space of six points after 18 days… Since the usual leaders of the division, Basel and especially YB, are less celebrating than usual, the outsiders are taking advantage. Among them, and this is rare enough to be underlined, a slew of “Latins”. There are 15 days left before the first 6 and the next 6 are divided into two separate championships, for the title and against relegation.

Never in a quarter of a century has the LS been so well ranked in the Swiss elite. Ludovic Magnin’s team is even the best team in the country at home. She even managed to win 6 matches in a row on her synthetic turf this fall, which hadn’t happened since 1997! The “kid from here” Alvyn Sanches has a lot to do with it. He already has 5 goals and 3 assists. But has also tackled 40 times this season, which makes him 3rd in the Super League in this area. It will be scrutinized during the transfer window.

The Garnet have only won one of their last 7 matches before Christmas (it was against Lugano, two weeks ago). A bit like last season, when it created an illusion in the title race before lowering its flag, Servette FC did not manage to seize a leadership chair which it had been given several times the arms. The Genevans are carried at arm’s length by Derek Kutesa (11 goals) and the others do not follow. Only 4 other players have scored more than one goal, including defender Steve Rouiller (3).

Three victories in their last three matches was the challenge launched by coach Didier Tholot to his players. Since they succeeded, the Valaisans will return from vacation on January 2 instead of December 30. The newly promoted Tourbillon, whose squad has changed little compared to the one who put FC Sion back in the Super League, is astonishing observers. And when he has found his injured (Miranchuk, Bua…), the dreams of top 6 will be allowed. His iron man? Numa Lavanchy. He didn’t miss a minute of play.

“Papa Noël, a new coach please!” The Yverdon Ultras want change. Usually, their leaders give them some, drastically changing their squad as soon as a transfer window approaches. But the most fervent North Vaudois fans are especially angry with their coaches Alessandro Mangiarratti. Not sure that this is the biggest problem for a team which had built its success last season on big results at home. In 24/25, they only scored 8 goals at the Municipal Stadium and 16 in total. Insufficient.

The Swiss football fan who has been touring the world for six months and who does not have the 20 minutes application must make a strange face when seeing the Super League rankings. Basel is certainly 2nd, but tied with LS. The Young Boys are under the bar (9th) after making a fool of themselves in Europe. On the other hand, and even if it lost on Sunday against LS (1-4), FC Lugano is a good leader. The people of Ticino also shine on the European front. It’s deserved for a team that has already played 32 games this year, compared to just 21 for the majority of others.
