UNITED STATES – Back at the White House, after a stint in prison.
Peter Navarro, former trade advisor to Donald Trump during his first term, will resume his functions as soon as the billionaire returns to the White House, scheduled for January 20, 2025. The fact that he served a four-month prison sentence does not did not dissuade the former president from renewing his confidence in him.

“I am pleased to announce that Peter Navarro, a man who has been treated horribly by the Deep State, or whatever you want to call him, will be my Senior Advisor to Trade and Industry.”the president-elect announced this Wednesday, December 4 in a message posted on his Truth Social network.

L’“Deep State” is a widespread notion among Donald Trump supporters that government bureaucrats are working behind the scenes against him. Last January, Peter Navarro was sentenced to four months in prison, found guilty of refusing to respond to a summons and to provide documents to the House of Representatives committee investigating the assault on the Capitol. He was released from prison in mid-July.

On January 6, 2021, hundreds of supporters of Donald Trump stormed the Capitol, seat of the US Congress, in an attempt to prevent the certification of the victory of his Democratic opponent Joe Biden.

Direct consequences for the international economy

“During my first term, few have been more effective or tenacious than Peter in upholding my two sacred rules: Buy American, hire American.”greeted Donald Trump again. “He helped me renegotiate unfair trade deals like NAFTA and the Korea-US Free Trade Agreement, and implemented every one of my customs and trade actions QUICKLY”he added.

The free trade treaty between South Korea and the United States was renegotiated upon Donald Trump’s arrival at the White House and an agreement was reached in March 2018.

As for Nafta, which was signed in 1994 between Canada, the United States and Mexico, it was replaced on July 1, 2020 by a new version, the North American Free Trade Treaty (USMCA).

Donald Trump has already threatened a general increase in customs duties, including for Canada. His Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was received on Friday by the president-elect at his residence in Florida.
