Died in 2005, the prostitute Grisélidis Real, who made a name for herself through her tireless fight for the rights of sex workers, now has a place named after her in the Pâquis district of Geneva. The Geneva Council of State validated the proposal on Wednesday.
The City of Geneva has long wanted to pay tribute to this woman by giving her a street or square name. But the locations selected by the municipality were all refused, because they notably involved changes of address. The place found in Pâquis does not pose this problem.
Place Grisélidis-Real is located at the corner of rue Philippe-Plantamour and rue du Léman, indicates the Council of State in a press release. Grisélidis Real has marked the history of the Pâquis district and of Geneva. The notoriety of the woman who was also a writer and painter has gone beyond Swiss borders.
