Struck with the infamous seal of “foreign agent” in 2016, the Levada sociological studies center is trying as best it can to continue doing its work in a Russia in the middle of war. Its researchers have practically no more orders, their production is closely scrutinized by the authorities and they always make sure to identify themselves in any public speech as “foreign agents”, exactly as the law stipulates.
Recently, they decided to take the pulse of their compatriots on a subject that is both universal and, a priori, politically harmless: their relationship to death and posthumous life. To the question “Have you thought about your death and, if so, are you ready for it?” ”, only 12% of them answered in the affirmative; 42% answered “no”, 39% didn’t think about it at all, and 7% of respondents had difficulty answering. Another surprise in a country whose population declares itself, in the vast majority, Orthodox Christian, few Russians believe in life after death: only 18%, while more than 48% say they do not believe in it at all.
