iPhones running a version prior to iOS 15.1 will soon no longer be supported by WhatsApp.
If you’re still using an old iPhone and you’re used to messaging, calling, or video chatting using WhatsApp, you may only have a few months left to enjoy it. Like every year, WhatsApp has just announced that it will stop working on certain old iPhone models in the coming months.
Old iPhones left behind
So far, all iPhones running at least iOS 12 are supported. But by next May, WhatsApp plans to end support for Apple devices running a version earlier than iOS 15.1. This is what the instant messenger announced in an update published on its FAQ.
“As of May 5, 2025, only iOS version 15.1 and later will be supported. »
In practical terms, this means that you will need to be using at least a 1st or 2nd generation iPhone SE, or an iPhone 6s or 6s Plus, or any later iPhone model, to continue using WhatsApp. All previous devices, which were still supported, will be put aside by the messaging application. This is the case, for example, with the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. On these three devices, which were launched a little over ten years ago by Apple, the latest version of iOS available is iOS 12.5.7.
Before cutting off messaging access on affected iPhones, WhatsApp says it will display several reminders prompting users to upgrade their device. As for those whose iPhone is not eligible to install iOS 15.1, they still have six months to consider changing their device if they want to be able to continue using WhatsApp.
