  • According to Federal Councilor Albert Rösti, the Gornerli is a centerpiece of Switzerland’s energy future.

  • This new dam must meet a third of the objective of increasing the winter production of storage power plants by 2 terawatt hours by 2040.

  • The project leaders hope that it will see the light of day in 2031.

The project leaders are not talking about a dam, but about a “multiple-purpose reservoir” of the Gornerli. The concrete wall that the company Grande Dixence SA aims to erect above Zermatt, at the foot of the Gorner glacier, must protect the region against floods and ensure its supply of drinking water. But, above all, it must contribute to Switzerland’s security of supply. And to ensure its rapid implementation, a support group bringing together the Confederation, the canton, the granting municipalities and the Grande Dixence company – mainly owned by Alpiq – was created this Friday.

“The Gornerli is a key piece of the puzzle of Switzerland’s energy future,” said Albert Rösti, head of the Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communication, who made the trip to Visp for the occasion. And the UDC minister added: “If in the long term I am in favor of thinking about all types of energy, in the medium term the centerpiece can only be renewables.”
