Ruag MRO could return to federal hands. The legal form of limited company no longer meets current requirements, the Federal Council estimated on Wednesday. This is studying different options, including an attachment to the Federal Department of Defense (DDPS).

The choice of the private law SA dates back almost thirty years and aimed to allow the participation of private individuals. The Confederation wanted to limit itself to its shareholder rights.

But the current geopolitical situation is very different. It requires more dynamic political management, believes the Federal Council. He decided to examine the legal forms of public law that could apply to Ruag MRO. The Confederation would thus have greater freedom of organization.

A draft must be developed by the end of May 2025 for consultation.

New president

Jürg Rötheli will be the new chairman of the board of directors of the arms company Ruag MRO, whose sole shareholder is the Confederation. The Federal Council appointed him on Wednesday to succeed Nicolas Perrin.

Aged 61, “Jürg Rötheli has the perfect profile to serve as chairman of the board of directors of Ruag MRO,” the government wrote in a press release. He brings with him his rich background as a manager and advisor in various companies, some of which are close to the State.

As general director of the ORS group, which provides supervision and accommodation for asylum seekers, he was used to collaborating with the Federal Administration and finding himself at the center of political debates, writes the Federal Council .

His predecessor Nicolas Perrin resigned at the beginning of 2024, when Ruag MRO was singled out by a Financial Control audit for its management of the sale of Leopard 1 combat tanks.
