“On January 20, as one of my many first executive orders, I will sign all necessary documents to impose 25 percent tariffs on Mexico and Canada on all products entering the United States through their borders open,” Donald Trump said in a series of messages published on his social network Truth.

He added: “These measures will remain in effect until drugs, especially fentanyl, and all illegal aliens stop invading our country! Mexico and Canada have the absolute power to easily solve this problem which has been brewing for a long time.

In another message to China, Donald Trump said he will impose 10% tariffs “in addition to any additional tariffs” on imports from the United States, again citing fentanyl and other illicit drugs.

“I have had numerous discussions with China about the massive quantities of fentanyl and other drugs being sent to the United States, but to no avail. Chinese officials told me they would enforce the penalty maximum, namely the death penalty, for any drug trafficker caught in the act. Unfortunately, they never followed through and drugs are entering our country, mainly through Mexico, at levels never reached before. he indicated.

Canada, Mexico and China are the United States’ three largest trading partners. Together, they account for $831.20 million in the country’s trade, according to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative.

During his first term, Donald Trump pressured Mexico and Canada to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement, resulting in a revised agreement with these countries. It is unclear whether they will allow negotiations to continue.

He also sparked a trade war with China, which continues today after President Joe Biden left in place many of the tariffs imposed during Trump’s first term and raised others in September, particularly on electric vehicles, solar panels and electric car batteries.

China said on Tuesday it remained open to “dialogue” after US President-elect Donald Trump threatened to impose high customs duties on Chinese products entering the United States.

“On your question, I currently have no information to provide. But in principle, we are open to maintaining dialogue and communication,” said Mao Ning, a spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, when asked on whether Beijing was in contact with the Republican billionaire’s team.
