The Grand Hôpital de Charleroi has inaugurated its radiotherapy department on its new “Les Viviers” site in Gilly, equipped with the latest generation of equipment. Among them, the TrueBeam from Varian, a subsidiary of Siemens Healthineers, stands out for its performance in terms of precision and speed.
“Oncology is one of the priorities of the Grand Hôpital de Charleroi,” underlines Dr Benjamin Ledoux, head of the radiotherapy department. “Thanks to TrueBeam, our patients benefit from quality care, with increased precision and improved comfort. » This system is particularly suitable for stereotactic treatments, making it possible to irradiate small tumors at high doses in a limited number of sessions, while minimizing side effects.
The TrueBeam is equipped with the HD MLC collimator, a device allowing optimal configuration of the radiotherapy beam. “With its very thin blades, this device ensures remarkable precision, essential for treating small tumors effectively,” adds Dr. Ledoux.
Saving valuable time for patients
The speed of processing is another major advantage of the TrueBeam, made possible by FFF (flattening filter-free radiation) technology. This significantly reduces the time required for each session, limiting the discomfort linked to the immobility of patients. “By shortening the duration of treatments, we also reduce uncertainties due to involuntary movements, guaranteeing high quality care,” explains the specialist.
Integrated innovations for better care coordination
In addition to TrueBeam, the Grand Hôpital de Charleroi modernized its management systems with Varian’s Eclipse and ARIA solutions, integrated into a single database. This configuration reduces manual intervention and the risk of errors, providing a smoother and more secure workflow for medical staff.
A rigorous process for optimized commissioning
The installation of the TrueBeam, finalized in early 2024, was followed by intensive testing before it was put into service in November. “We benefited from comprehensive support from Varian, including training on reference sites abroad. This exemplary collaboration has allowed us to take charge of these technologies with confidence,” says Dr Ledoux.
