Around 5:17 p.m., a security agent witnessed shoplifting in a business located on Boulevard de l’Ormière, in the Duberger-Les Saules district.

According to information from Soleil, the suspect allegedly stole a case of beer before running off, followed closely by the officer.

During his run, “the individual jumped over a fence and found himself in an unfortunate position,” relates Sandra Dion, spokesperson for the Quebec City Police Service (SPVQ).

After his jump, the man aged in his thirties fell into a ravine located near the Saint-Charles River and Costebelle Avenue. At this location, the rock cliff is over 50 feet high.

A long rescue

When they arrived on scene, the police noticed that the man was conscious at the bottom of the cliff. In the circumstances, they called on the Intervention Group in Perilous Environments (GRIMP).

The GRIMP intervenes in rescue in natural and artificial environments where the traditional means of the Fire Brigade are unsuitable, insufficient or whose use proves dangerous due to the height or depth and the various risks linked to the route.

Around 7 p.m., firefighters finally managed to get the man out of the ravine. He was transported to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The SPVQ is continuing its investigation into this event. The man will be interviewed and could face various charges.
