According to the American media Axios and CNN, this agreement could be approved by the Israeli security council as early as this Tuesday.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly approved the principle of a ceasefire with Hezbollah, the Lebanese Islamist militia, during a security council held on Sunday evening. This is what a source close to the matter told the American channel CNN, cross-checking information transmitted to the media Axios by a senior American official.

According to the latter, the Israeli security council should officially approve this agreement this Tuesday. “We are close to the finish line, but we haven’t crossed it yet. Something can always go wrong between now and the conclusion of this agreement.”he says. In the event of a misstep by either party, the process could come to a halt.

60 days to leave southern Lebanon

This proposed ceasefire would include a sixty-day period, during which Israeli soldiers would be asked to leave southern Lebanon. At the same time, the regular Lebanese army would deploy in areas near the border, while Hezbollah would withdraw its heavy weapons north of the Litani River. Israel has regularly requested the application of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, wanting the pro-Iranian Lebanese Shiite movement to withdraw north of the Litani River.

The agreement includes a monitoring committee, led by the United States, to monitor the implementation of the process and address potential violations.

This Friday, Emmanuel Macron and Joe Biden spoke about a possible ceasefire in Lebanon. This agreement would allow hundreds of thousands of civilians on both sides of the border to gradually return home.
