Before the kick-off of the round of 16 of Euro 2024 between France and Belgium, the French anthem “La Marseillaise” was whistled by Belgian fans. Before that, the Blues supporters also booed – less loudly and for less time – the Belgian anthem.
It’s not just on the pitch that the battle is raging between France and Belgium. Rivals, especially since the 2018 World Cup, the fans launched hostilities before the kick-off of the round of 16 at the Euro this Monday. As is tradition, the anthems of both teams rang out at the Düsseldorf Arena.

To begin with, it was the one from Belgium, “La Brabançonne”, which was whistled at the beginning by the French fans. The Belgians in the stands took their “revenge” by massively whistling “La Marseillaise”. If this did not prevent Kylian Mbappé and his teammates from singing the national anthem, these images remain regrettable on both sides. Since the start of the competition, many anthems have been booed.
A shower of cards for the Blues in the first half
While Les Bleus made a serious start with control in the game, Didier Deschamps’ men also collected warnings. Swedish referee Glenn Nyberg gave yellow cards to Aurélien Tchouameni, Antoine Griezmann and Adrien Rabiot, who was under threat of suspension.
