The European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement, Oliver Várhelyiis on an official visit to Morocco to reaffirm the European Union’s commitment to the country and strengthen strategic relations between the two parties. This visit is part of the long-standing cooperation between Morocco and the European Union, marked by joint initiatives in various areas.
High-level meetings and signing of a support program
During his stay, the commissioner will meet Moroccan officials, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad, Nasser Bourita, the Minister of Economy and Finance, Nadia Fettah Alaoui, and the general director of the Mohammed VI Fund for Investment, Mohamed Benchaâboun. These meetings aim to discuss common priorities and strengthen bilateral cooperation.
One of the key moments of this visit will be the signing, in the presence of the Minister Delegate in charge of the Budget, Fouzi Lekjaâ, of an integrated program for the reconstruction and upgrading of areas affected by the earthquake of September 2023. This program, financed to the tune of 190 million euros by the European Union, is part of an overall envelope of 225 million euros. It aims to support affected populations, revive essential public services and revitalize the local economy in disaster areas.
At the end of the day, Commissioner Várhelyi will visit the El Menzeh wastewater treatment center, a project of the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE). This center benefits from the support of the European Union as part of the Moroccan National Sanitation Plan, one of the priority areas of the Economic and Investment Plan for the Southern Neighborhood.
Since 2020, this plan has supported the major reforms undertaken by the Kingdom in several strategic sectors, such as:
- The green partnership for the energy transition.
- L’agriculture durable.
- Social protection and employment.
- Education and migration management.
