Ovechkin’s condition must be re-evaluated on a weekly basis due to a left leg injury. The Caps’ decision to place Ovechkin on the injured list means he will miss at least the team’s next three games.
The 39-year-old veteran, however, is expected to be out for longer after colliding with Utah Hockey Club’s Jack McBain on Monday night.
The Russian’s absence will slow down his quest for the NHL career goals record, which belongs to Wayne Gretzky. He is only 27 goals away from Gretzky’s mark, having hit the target 15 times in 18 games this season.
Ovechkin was on track to reach the 895-goal mark sometime next February before he was injured in the third period of the game in Salt Lake City. Earlier in this game, he had tied another NHL record by defeating a 178e different goalie in the Bettman circuit.
In addition to Ovechkin, the Capitals have indicated they will place Sonny Milano on the long-term injured list. Milano is sidelined with an upper body injury.
