MLS: Joel Waterman signs a three-year contract extension with CF Montreal

CF Montreal awarded Joel Waterman a three-year contract extension on Wednesday, meaning the central defender will remain with the team for the 2025, 2026 and 2027 seasons.

“I’m really happy to have signed a contract extension with the club,” Waterman said.

CF Montreal specified that this agreement also includes an option year for the 2028 campaign.

“We are very happy that Joel will remain with us in Montreal for several more years,” said CF Montreal President and CEO Gabriel Gervais. Over the past few years, he has continued to develop and made great progress with us. He has established himself as a veteran and leader within the group. We are confident that he will continue to play a key role in achieving our goals. »

In the 2024 season, Waterman totaled 2,131 minutes of play in 25 games, including 24 starts. The 28-year-old veteran has also reached the milestone of 100 matches and 100 starts in MLS.

Waterman joined CF Montreal on January 14, 2020, becoming the first player to transfer from a Canadian Premier League club to an MLS club.

In five seasons in Montreal, the native of Langley, British Columbia, accumulated 9,581 minutes of play, 112 matches and 108 starts, in addition to having scored four goals and collected 11 assists in MLS.

Waterman notably helped the Bleu-blanc-noir win the Canadian Championship in 2021. He played a total of six matches during two editions of the Concacaf Champions League in 2020 and 2022. He also helped the team to finish second in the Eastern Conference during the 2022 season.
