The Secretary of State for energy transition, Wael Chouchane, participated in the 26th edition of the African Energy Forum organized under the theme “Future Energy Systems: Balancing Africa’s needs with global goals”, from June 25 to 28, 2024 in Barcelona – Spain, in the presence of the Director General of Electricity and Renewable Energy at the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy, Belhassan Chiboub, and a large number of active international companies in the energy sector and senior officials in this area.

On this occasion, Wael Chouchane presented the energy strategy for 2035 which aims to reduce the energy deficit, to produce 35% of electricity from renewable energies by 2030, to reduce demand by 30% primary energy and 45% carbon and greenhouse gas emissions.

Thus, he specified that the Tunisian government plans to implement energy transition programs to develop the use of renewable energies, promote energy efficiency, electrical connectivity and integrate modern technologies in all economic sectors.

For his part, Belhassan Chiboub presented the different systems for producing electricity from renewable energies, such as the self-production system, licenses and obligations, as well as the main lines of the National Strategy for the development of Green Hydrogen and its derived products by 2050, which aims to produce 8.3 million tonnes by 2050, including 2.3 million tonnes for the local market and 6 million tonnes for export.

In the same framework, the Secretary of State had a series of bilateral meetings with a number of institutions and organizations participating in this forum. It is :

– A delegation from the French company “Voltalia”, active in the renewable energy sector, led by its General Director of the company, Sébastien Clerc, who discussed with the Secretary of State the monitoring of the implementation of the project production of 100 MW of photovoltaic solar electricity in Gafsa, with work starting in 2025 and the project entering production by 2026;

– A delegation from the International Finance Corporation (IFC). The two sides discussed prospects for joint cooperation to further boost investments in the renewable energy sector;

– A delegation from GE Vernova led by the General Manager of the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia region. They discussed strengthening joint cooperation for the development of electricity production infrastructure IN Tunisia;

– Meeting with the President and CEO of the Algerian Electricity and Gas Company “SONELGAZ”, Mourad Ajal, where the two parties expressed the depth of the historic relations of friendship and partnership between the two brotherly countries and the pursuit of bilateral cooperation, particularly in the area of ​​electricity exchange.

– Meeting with the Vice-President of TotalEnegies Renewables, Fabienne Demol, where the two parties discussed the prospects for bilateral cooperation in the field of renewable energies and the production of green hydrogen and its derivatives.

– Meeting with Swicorp, an organization active in the field of energy infrastructure, where areas of cooperation in clean energy, notably wind energy, and participation in tenders for electricity production projects were discussed from renewable energies under the package system.
