The federal highway police and the local police will organize, this Wednesday, November 20 from 6 a.m., the 21st edition of the speed control marathon. For 24 hours, they will intensify speed checks on Belgian roads.
For the police, the objective is clear with this 21st marathon of speed checks: to encourage drivers to moderate their speed and respect the limits.
And when we look at old marathons, the observation is simple: there is still work. To take an example: in November last year, 6.19% of drivers stopped were speeding. In April 2024, this figure was 6.02%. A decrease, certainly, but very small.
Among the main causes of road accidents, we obviously find speeding, but also driving under the influence and the use of a mobile phone while driving.
With this marathon, the police hope to raise awareness among road users and thus reduce the risk of accidents.
