The Boston Bruins have fired head coach Jim Montgomery.
Deputy Joe Sacco will take over in the interim with the departure of Montgomery, who has led the team since July 1, 2022.
“Today I made the difficult decision to make a coaching change,” said general manager Don Sweeney. Jim Montgomery is a great NHL coach and an even better person. He has had a positive impact on the Bruins organization and we are grateful to have had the opportunity to work with and learn from him. His accomplishments include a historic season and I want to thank him and his entire family. »
The Bruins lost just 41 times in regulation in 184 games under Montgomery. He has an overall record of 120-41-23, for an efficiency average of .715.
In his first season, he led his team to a league-high 135 points, then the following year to second place in the Atlantic Association. However, they have just suffered a third defeat in a row, two of them by crushing scores which add up to a record of 8-9-3.
“The team’s performance and inconsistency during the first 20 games of the 2024-2025 season are worrying and below what we wish to offer fans. I believe Joe Sacco has the experience necessary to bring the players and the team back on the path to success,” added Sweeney of the man who is playing an 11th season behind the Boston bench.
