Bangladesh continues to face a severe dengue crisis. Last Sunday, the country reported eight new deaths from the viral disease, bringing the total to 415 deaths this year. The majority of these deaths, seven, were recorded in the capital, Dhaka.

The epidemiological situation is also worsening with a notable increase in hospitalizations. According to the General Directorate of Health Services, 1,389 new hospitalizations were recorded on Sunday, bringing the total number of cases since January to almost 80,000. Currently, 4,035 patients are still under treatment in different hospital establishments.

Professor Kabirul Bashar, an expert in entomology at Jahangirnagar University, warned of the possibility of an exacerbation of the situation during the months of October and November. This prediction is linked to the lack of adequate measures to counter the spread of dengue and the heavy rainfall observed in September.

Official statistics reveal that in 2023, Bangladesh has already recorded a record 1,705 dengue-related deaths, with a total of 321,179 cases of infection reported. This situation illustrates the urgency of a more robust and rapid health response to contain the epidemic.
