Egypt and Brazil announced on Monday the establishment of a bilateral “strategic partnership”, in order to realize the interests and ambitions of the two friendly peoples, in light of 100 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

This is what emerges from a joint statement issued by the Egyptian presidency, following a meeting between President Abdelfattah al-Sissi and his Brazilian counterpart Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, on the sidelines of the G20 summit which is held in Rio de Janeiro on November 18 and 19.

The two leaders “examined ways to strengthen bilateral relations and signed a joint declaration raising relations between the two countries to the level of strategic partnership, capable of realizing the interests and ambitions of the two friendly peoples”, indicated the presidency Egyptian.

According to the same source, “the two countries decided to inaugurate a strategic partnership, in light of 100 years of diplomatic relations between Egypt and Brazil, marked by the diversity and deepening of bilateral relations.”

The two parties explained this new step by “the desire of the two countries to work together for the rooting of peace, to consolidate a more representative and more equitable world order and to renew and reform the multilateral system”.

The joint statement noted the conclusion of a number of memorandums of understanding between Egypt and Brazil, including the establishment of a strategic dialogue mechanism, signed on December 27, 2009, a memorandum on political negotiations signed on December 9, 2003 and an agreement establishing a coordination committee, signed on March 7, 1985.

The strategic partnership between the two countries was signed “on the basis of 7 considerations, including in particular, the intensification of cooperation in several areas, among others, politics, diplomacy, peace, security, defense, economy , trade and investment.

The two countries also decided to put in place “an action plan, through diplomatic channels, setting the necessary initiatives for the implementation of the strategic partnership and updating a regular work program reflecting the dynamics of bilateral relations.

The G20 summit is being held in the city of Rio de Janeiro on November 18 and 19, with the participation of heads of state, governments and delegations, according to the same source.

The Group of 20 (G20) is a global forum focusing in particular on economic issues, bringing together the top 20 economies globally, with 19 members in addition to the European Union.

The member countries are: Turkey, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, , Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, South Korea South, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States.

According to the Egyptian Presidency statement, the two sides reviewed the current regional situation, with President Al-Sisi reviewing “Egypt’s efforts for the restoration of stability in the Middle East and an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon.

The Egyptian president also praised Brazilian positions in favor of the Palestinian cause, with both sides favoring “the obligation to implement the two-state solution, the expansion of global recognition of the Palestinian state and refusal of all attempts to classify the Palestinian cause,” according to the statement.

Since October 7, 2023, the Israeli army has been waging a genocidal war on the Gaza Strip, causing nearly 147,000 Palestinian victims, between dead and wounded, with Tel Aviv extending its intervention, since September 23, to include most of the Palestinians. Lebanese regions, including the capital Beirut.
